I know we are busy but we must get this blog updated.......
I stress again, ALWAYS USE AN AFRA REMOVALIST when moving home in Sydney. I have had numerous calls from distressed people, particularly during this rainy period, trying to book a fruniture removalist, at short notice, as their removalists have either not turned up or have actully turned up but seen a bad access on a rainy day and simply left the job.

Of course I would like you to use Man and His Van, but if not...use a furniture removlist that belonga to AFRA.

Leaving Australia

I wonder why the manufactures are leaving Australia?

The answer is so obvious; employers simply cannot afford to pay staff. The great gravy train continues for the Australian worker.

Current entitlements include:
4 weeks holiday per year
payment of an extra 17.5% of Salary whilst on holiday
an extra 2 months paid holiday after 10 years employment
8 days sick leave which is often taken as holiday
An extra 9% of salary paid into a pension fund by the employer
Double-time for a Saturday
Double-time-and-a-half for a Sunday
Union picnic days ( do they really all go off for a picnic)

etc etc etc.. afraid the list just goes on

Back Burning and the Greenies

The Australian fires have shocked us all. And to think arsonists are responsible. But that is not the whole story. Ok the Arsonists did start the fires, but why was there so much fuel on the ground? For that you can blame the greenie ideology and the left wing councils. Australia has a time honoured tradition of back burning every few years: during the colder winter months we burn-off all the scrub within a few hundred metes of the house. This practice has been carried out by the Aborigines for thousands of years. These days however a permit is needed to back -burn and it is the greenie councils that issue (or are supposed to issue) the permits. Recently most requests for back-burning have been refused for such reasons as “the dead wood provides a home for ants and other microscopic creatures” Land owners that back-burn without a permit face fines in excess of $50,000. There is one chilling example in Victoria of a man recently being fined $50,000 for clearing bush for his family's safety, yet his house was the only house left standing in his street. These greenies are the real mass murderers.

Be Careful with Furniture Removalists

Looking for a furniture removalist ? Then beware, the Australian furniture removal industry is an unregulated mess. Basically, anyone with a truck can call themselves a professional furniture removalist. All they need is an advertisement in the local newspaper and a mobile phone. These fly-by-night ‘removalists’ will demand cash after the job as often they possess no legitimate company bank accounts. And watch-out when thinks go wrong – because thinks will go wrong, very wrong ; the consumer will have no way of enforcing any action as the company is not even registered and no physical address exists.

Using an AFRA member is the main rule when choosing a furniture removalist. AFRA is the Australian Furniture Removers Association. To become an AFRA member removalist companies must reach the required standard in areas such as staff training, correct insurance policies, correct equipment, suitable premises, secure storage facilities and a competent trading record. All AFRA members will carry the correct public liability and additionally only AFRA members are legally entitled to offer full insurance for goods in transit and storage. AFRA give the following warning notice on their Sydney web site :WARNING : choosing the wrong removalist could cost you thousands of dollars.

During a recent interview, a manager from AFRA removalist Man and His Van stated the following
“Any Saturday, but particularly a Saturday of a long weekend, we take numerous calls from distraught people. These people urgently need help because their removalists have not turned up, or their removalists started the jobs but decided it was too big, so they left; we often hear about other removalists smashing furniture and walls so the customer sends them away. I will not even tell you about some situations because they are just so incredible”

All consumers in Australia have some protection under the Trade Practices act of 1974. This Act ensures Tradesmen will conduct themselves in a “workman like manner” ; basically it ensures they will do a decent job. However, the Act does have some limitations, for example when a furniture removalist is working for a company rather than a private individual, of when damages occur which are not the fault of the removalist or when the customer did not advise the removalist that some object were of a brittle or fragile nature. To ensure full peace of mind when moving house it is recommended that the customer always takes out transit insurance with the removalist.

So, be very careful when moving house in Sydney. Always use an AFRA removalist, look for a company with a decent history, ask to see any testimonial letters, only use a company with a physical address and depot and always take out transit insurance.

Unfortunately things can go wrong, even with AFRA members. The difference though is AFRA members will efficiently rectify the situation. In the unlikely case that this does not happen then the customer has the right to take the case to an AFRA tribunal where any decision is binding.

Sydney still ticking over after interest rate rise

Ok, so interest rate went up by 0.25%, so what. Things may not by flat-out, but they are still ticking over nicely. The main cause for concern is the tight rental marked here in the Manly area.

We are taking bookings now for next Tuesday onwards. We are just about fully booked for furniture removals in the week before Christmas.

The reserve bank meets today. It is a tale of two cities Western Australia is booming, Sydney is slowing down. An interest rate rise is needed, but it will realy hurt Sydney and of course the farming sector. Let us see what happens.

We are turning work away today as most of out staff (including me) are at Melbourne Cup functions. I am rather upset at not being invited to the Emirates Airlines Tent but I suppose us furniture Removalists don't really fly that much.

As the Nation stops, this day should be a Public Holiday - I suggest, with all due respect, we swap it for the Queens Birthday ( for goodness sake, the queens birthday is not even a holiday in the UK).

The Reserve Bank meets to day, interest rates are expected to be pushed up - I will be speaking on this tomorrow.

THE NSW Government has told the Roads and Traffic Authority to ensure toll-road operators pursue drivers who do not pay, even though the private companies are not legally bound to do so.

The Premier, Morris Iemma, admitted yesterday that drivers had a right to be angry that no fines were issued for failure to pay the toll on the Cross City Tunnel or the M2 last financial year.

His comments came as both motorways warned motorists not to try to use the roads for free.

Mr Iemma said the Roads Minister, Eric Roozendaal, and the RTA would take up the issue with the motorway companies, as failure to pursue evaders sent a poor message to their customers.

"It's not fair on the drivers who are doing the right thing and paying the tolls," Mr Roozendaal told 2UE. "I wouldn't be surprised if it caused a lot of anger.

"I am concerned the private toll operators are not treating all motorists equally and fairly. I have asked the RTA to contact [them] to make sure this no longer occurs."

It is understood private toll operators are not legally or contractually bound to chase toll evaders, and whether to do so is a decision for each company.

An RTA spokesman said that under the terms of the agreements with the operators of the Cross City Tunnel and the M2, the pursuit of unpaid toll revenue was a matter for the operators.

An industry source said pursuing fare evaders was not in the financial interests of toll companies because most of the cost of this could not be recouped. Most people did pay the toll.

A spokeswoman for Transurban said it acquired the M2 early last year and was still setting up an enforcement system. The company would move to request penalty notices, and it wanted to see those who refused to pay the fines pursued through the State Debt Recovery Office or the courts.

CrossCity Motorway said it had given motorists "reasonable opportunity" to pay for tunnel trips if they had not done so. Evaders had been sent an initial reminder. "After receiving this notice many motorists have already paid the toll," the company said. "If some refuse to meet their obligations, then further infringement notices will be generated.

"Motorists that travel through the [tunnel] without making an effort to pay will be pursued." It did not say when it would start pursuing evaders.
